Noosa District State High School has been granted funding to help young people with a disability to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program.

Communities and Youth Minister Warren Pitt said Noosa High’s Special Education Unit would receive $1000 under the award’s Enhancing Access Project.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award organisation made $20,000 available to Queensland to be distributed as small sponsorships for organisations and schools,” Mr Pitt said.

“The goal is to increase access to the award by removing financial barriers for at-risk young people such as those experiencing financial difficulty or who are at risk of disengaging from training or schooling.

“Noosa High will support young people with disabilities to take part in the Adventurous Journey component of the award.”

Mr Pitt said the one-off sponsorships also encouraged organisations not registered with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program to become involved and enhance their services to young people.

“The awards are designed to be flexible, challenging and fun,” Mr Pitt said.

“They provide opportunities for positive developmental activities that build on young people’s strengths and improve factors such as community connectedness and positive self-esteem.”
