The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Community projects in the shires of Johnstone and Cardwell have an opportunity to share in more than $100,000 under a special program being run by Powerlink Queensland, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

Minister Wilson said Powerlink had set aside $108,000 for its 2007 Community Benefits Program which is run in conjunction with its Tully to Innisfail transmission line project.

“It’s a commendable initiative and it’s Powerlink’s way of giving something back to the community,” Mr Wilson said.

Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program aims to provide tangible and lasting benefits to local communities in close proximity to new transmission line projects.

“Powerlink has helped fund many worthwhile community projects across Queensland, including the installation of a shade shelter at a local school, books for a community lending library and landscape work for a respite centre.

“I encourage community groups in the Johnstone and Cardwell areas interested in applying for funding to contact Powerlink or their local council for an information package.”

Powerlink Chief Executive Gordon Jardine said while construction of the new Tully to Innisfail transmission line was progressing reasonably well, the persistent wet weather meant the expected timing for completion of the line was early 2008.

“The new transmission line is essential to ensure future high-voltage electricity supply to far north Queensland and to underpin the region’s economic growth,” Mr Jardine said.

Funding for the Community Benefits Program is addition to the compensation paid to landowners directly affected by the transmission line project, and is allocated to selected community projects that can demonstrate broad community support.

Applications for funding will close on Friday 24 August 2007.
