Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Long-term unemployed in the Cardwell region will gain valuable experience and paid work at the National Land and Sea Conference in October.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Girringun Aboriginal Corporation had been awarded $339,720 to run the Skilling Queenslanders for Work project.
“Twenty-four local long-term unemployed people will assist with planning, preparing and managing the event, and 12 of those will gain ongoing employment,” Mr Mickel said.
“Queensland’s booming economy has helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to a 30-year low of 3.4 per cent.
“But the reality is that there will always be people who need the extra support jobs programs offer.”
Girringun Executive Officer Phil Rist said the conference would highlight the positive initiatives occurring to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the sustainable management of their land and seas.
“It will attract about 550 people from across Australia and several thousand for the follow on Festival,” Mr Rist said.
“In addition to event management skills 16 of the participants will undertake a range of town beautification works for the Cardwell Shire Council in preparation for the event including landscaping, revegetation, planting and horticulture.
“Participants will study units toward Certificate I in Information Technology and Certificate III in Tourism at the Barrier Reef TAFE.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
