Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Lee Kernaghan will lead a ‘Spirit of the Bush’ concert in Roma to help raise morale among drought-affected communities in south-west Queensland, Premier Peter Beattie said today.
Mr Beattie said the Queensland Government would provide $150,000 in sponsorship for the free public concert, and thanked Lee and fellow performers for their generosity in providing a much needed break for farming communities in the region.
“Queensland farmers and their families are struggling under the worst drought on record,” Mr Beattie said.
“The concert is a way of acknowledging the impact the drought is having on our hardworking regional communities and shows that the rest of Queensland is thinking of them.
“This is about farming families and regional communities coming together to enjoy a great day of music, while celebrating the special and shared experiences that bond them.
“The Government is proud to be involved in this event and I urge the community to get behind it,” he said.
Roma was chosen as the preferred site for the concert, after much consideration of issues such as severity of drought, suitability of concert venue and facilities, and the size of the local and regional population.
Mr Kernaghan will lead an impressive line up of national and international stars and said he was excited about the upcoming concert, expected to attract up to 15,000 people.
"If the Roma show is anything like the previous Spirit of the Bush concerts held earlier this year in Victoria and New South Wales we will see people coming from far and wide to enjoy the music performed by a great group of artists who are all donating their services to give drought affected communities a special day out," said Lee.
“The bush has a special place in my life, with my music forever inspired by not just the strength, character and resilience of country people, but their stories and humour in the face of continued adversity.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the show and I thank the Queensland Government for its support.”
Lee, along with Adam Brand and Steve Forde, have recently released a ‘Spirit of the Bush’ single, with all recording and publishing profits to go to the Aussie Helpers drought relief program assisting the worst hit farming families.
The Spirit of Bush concert will be held at Bassett Park Race Track in Roma, starting at 11.30am and finishing around 9pm on Sunday, 28 October, with free entry wristbands to be made available for collection about four weeks out from the event.
Further details will be released in coming weeks.
