Mackay: The best in Mackay business will be on show tonight at the second annual Best in Business Awards ceremony at the Mackay Entertainment Centre.

Jan Jarratt, Member for Whitsunday and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for State Development John Mickel, said the event was already being viewed as the most prestigious event on the region’s business calendar.

“Tonight is an important occasion because it gives our local business operators a chance to celebrate their success and get the recognition they deserve for making such a valuable contribution to our economy,” Ms Jarratt said.

“I certainly hope they inspire other firms to excel.”

Ms Jarratt said the Mackay region boasted a strong and vibrant business community.

“That is testament to not only our strengths in mining, marine, tourism, manufacturing and agribusiness but also to the many business operators in other sectors who see great opportunities in living and working in the region,” she said.

“We now have Mackay-based firms taking their ideas to the world, they are literally the best in the business.

“Take last year’s winner, Sonia Parish, who has gone on to win a Prime Minister’s award for her work in training young people in the hospitality industry.”

Ms Jarratt said 472 local businesses had nominated for this year’s awards across 31 categories.

The awards will be held at the Mackay Entertainment Centre, Gordon Street Mackay from 7pm this evening.
