Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure
The Honourable Anna Bligh
August 9, 2007
Queensland’s unemployment rate remained at a 29-year low during July, Deputy Premier and Treasurer Anna Bligh said today.
Ms Bligh said latest Australian Bureau of Statistics labour force statistics shows the trend unemployment rate remained at 3.5% in Queensland.
“This is the lowest unemployment level since they were playing Boney M’s Rivers of Babylon on the radio,” Ms Bligh said.
“And it means the policies of this Government have kept Queensland below the national unemployment for more than three years now.
“In the year to July, more than 82,000 jobs were created in Queensland, more than 30% of the national increase.
“And more than a third of all full-time jobs in Australia were created in Queensland, despite us having only 20% of the population.”
Ms Bligh said that Queensland employment grew at 4% over the year, stronger than any other state and well above the national average of 2.6%.
