Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries is investing in the future of science with a new scholarship scheme for Queensland University of Technology students, Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said today.
“Under the scheme the Department will provide funding of $20,000 each year to provide two QUT Faculty of Science students undertaking research related to the primary sector with the scholarships valued at up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of two years.
“We want to nurture the best and brightest who have aspirations to work in Queensland’s exciting fields of food technology, horticulture, aquaculture or agriculture,” he said.
Mr Mulherin met the first student winners, Kylie Shand and Milovan Bokan, during today’s Queensland’s Science in Parliament celebration.
Ms Shand, a Biochemistry and Microbiology Honours student from Hatton Vale, is developing a novel method of boosting protein levels in crop plants.
Mr Bolkan, a Biotechnology Honours student from Sunnybank, Brisbane, is researching improved methods for recovering sugar cane plants from cell culture with enhanced characteristics. These new transformation procedures will enable the sugar industry to more readily develop plants for biofuels or new biomaterials.
“The future of science in Queensland is in safe hands with the likes of Kylie and Milovan, who are conducting valuable research that will have long-term benefits for Queensland agriculture,’’ Mr Mulherin said.
“The scholarships are entirely in keeping with the Department developing itself as an economic development agency by moving into high-end niche markets, domestically and internationally, with top-quality produce supported by leading edge science,” he said.
“We already employ some of the state’s best scientific minds and through this scholarship scheme we will be supporting up and coming young scientists with their early studies.
“As well as providing funding for our scholarship students, DPI&F will also provide research project supervision, academic mentoring and work experience placements.
“In a world where technology is increasingly shaping our daily lives, a science degree is a passport to a fulfilling and vitally important career, and what better place to use your scientific skills than DPI&F.”
QUT’s Faculty of Science will soon call for applications for the 2008 DPI&F scholarship round.
The scholarships will be available to QUT students enrolled currently enrolled full-time in the second year or third year of the Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Mathematics course, with a major relevant to a DPI&F area of interest.
Applicants who are currently in third year must be intending to enter the Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) program in 2008.
For more information on this scholarship scheme please contact Mrs Maria Barrett, Faculty of Science, QUT on 3138 2152 or email to m.barrett@qut.edu.au.
DPI&F science staff work within a wide range of disciplines at many locations around Queensland. For information about career opportunities with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries visit www.dpi.qld.gov.au or contact our Call Centre on 13 25 23.
