Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

PREMIER WELCOMES NEW CEO TO LEAD SMART STATE UNIVERSITY

Premier Peter Beattie has tonight congratulated Professor Paul Greenfield AO on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of The University of Queensland from January 1, 2008.

“Professor Greenfield's wealth of industry experience will ensure UQ continues to be at the forefront of providing quality higher education and research outcomes,” Mr Beattie said.

“We're operating in a highly competitive global market and Paul, who took part in my trade mission to Korea and the USA earlier this year, is a strong advocate of developing industry links and delivering an educational experience of international standing,” he said.

“Professor Greenfield's current role at UQ, as Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, means he will ensure a smooth transition at the helm of this significant Smart State institution.

“His experience, drive and global outlook are important attributes and I am delighted to welcome Paul's appointment.”

Mr Beattie said Professor Greenfield was highly regarded as an academic and researcher, and he has been appointed to a number of government boards and won numerous consultancies.

He currently chairs the International Expert Panel established by the Queensland Water Commission and the Scientific Expert Panel of the SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership. He was recently appointed to the Clean Coal Council.

Premier Beattie also tonight paid tribute to the leadership of Professor John Hay AC, who has been Vice-Chancellor at The University of Queensland since 1996.

“I have known John for many years and he has worked hard to create a research and education legacy that not only benefits today's scholars and researchers, but tomorrow's Smart State.

“John's efforts have turned The University of Queensland into one of this country's best in terms of attracting research dollars and research output.”

In recognition of Professor Hay's contribution to Queensland, Mr Beattie presented him with a Queensland Great award in June this year. He was also named a Smart State Ambassador in 2006.
