HOWARD PROMISES TO WASTE TAXPAYERS DOLLARS
Prime Minister John Howard will waste millions of taxpayers dollars if he pushes ahead with his stunt to allow referenda on local government amalgamations in Queensland.
Premier Peter Beattie said the move was a blatant bit of trickery from Mr Howard that will hurt the hip pockets of thousands of Queensland families.
“No wonder Liberal party pollsters are worried that the Prime Minister is looking increasingly rattled and under pressure,” Mr Beattie said.
“His stunt today will have absolutely no impact on the outcome of the our local government reform process.
“Amalgamations will go ahead and to lead taxpayers on by letting them think referenda will make a difference is dishonest and sneaky.”
Mr Fraser said it was policy on the run from the Prime Minister.
“He is trying to shift the cost of pointless referenda from ratepayers to taxpayers,” Mr Fraser said.
“I have already indicated that Councillors will be personally liable for any costs associated with unnecessary referenda and that will still be the case if any Councils instigate this pointless exercise.
“I have also asked for further legal advice on the validity of the Prime Minister’s proposal.
“I am not surprised by the reports of polling that found Mr Howard is a ‘risk factor for the Government, which is increasingly perceived as dishonest’.”
