Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology
The Honourable Robert Schwarten
TAFE BUILDING SCORES TOP DESIGN AWARD
The design team behind Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE Toowoomba campus’ Block B was awarded the top sustainability award at the Royal Australian Institute of Architecture’s (RAIA) State Awards recently.
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten said he was pleased Project Services, a business unit of the Department of Public Works, had collected the Harry Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture.
“Winning RAIA’s highest accolade for sustainability for the South Queensland Institute of TAFE project is a major achievement for Project Services,” Mr Schwarten said.
“At the Department of Public Works, we try to lead the way in sustainable design and this award recognises the contribution we are making.
“The Project Services’ team designed the Block B building to deliver environmental benefits and cost savings through energy-efficient design.
“Motion sensors to lower lighting and air-conditioning were used, rainwater is collected for re-use, sun shades are used and natural ventilation is taken advantage of.”
RAIA State Awards Judging Director Peter Skinner said: “Project Services demonstrates an understanding of sustainable architecture that is a lesson to the profession.”
“In this project, sustainability is not added on as a supplement to a predetermined design,” Mr Skinner said.
