Queensland’s blossoming lifestyle horticulture industry is set to reap the dividends of a booming Chinese landscaping market through funding and assistance from Canberra and Beijing.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said DPI&F and the Australian Centre for Lifestyle Horticulture had successfully collaborated on a joint funding application to the Australian China Agriculture Cooperative Agreement program.

“This grant will be used to help lifestyle horticulture companies visit China to study market trends, establish new business contacts and develop commercial opportunities,” he said.

“It will also give Chinese organisations the opportunity to visit Australia to gain a better understanding of our lifestyle horticulture sector.

“Market research conducted by industry and DPI&F has identified landscaping as a high growth sector in China and a key market for Queensland.

“The Central Government in China is strongly promoting investment in greenscape or landscaping projects,” Mr Mulherin said.

“Increased exports to overseas markets such as China will not only boost the industry’s profitability, but provide a buffer against downturns in the domestic market influenced by water shortages.”

Chair of ACLH Don Scotts said the funding initiative was part of the ACLH Export sub-committee’s draft export strategy currently out for comment with industry.

“China was selected as one of three priority markets in the export strategy to boost Queensland’s export capabilities and opportunities,” Mr Scott said.

“This initiative will provide a valuable opportunity to Queensland companies to build key business partnerships in China.”

The ACACA program is a joint initiative of the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture in Beijing.
