WIDE BAY AVIATION INDUSTRY ON SHOW TO THE WORLD

Bundaberg: Wide Bay Burnett’s world-class aviation industry is on show to the world this weekend at the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow at Bundaberg Airport.

More than 25,000 aviation enthusiasts from across the globe are expected to attend this year’s event according to Gary Fenlon MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for State Development John Mickel, who will be hosting an aviation business luncheon today.

“This event is an incredible opportunity to showcase to the world just what Wide Bay Burnett is capable of in terms of delivering aviation expertise and product, not to mention infrastructure and opportunities for aviation businesses interested in a sea change,” he said.

Attracting new aviation businesses to the region is just one of the economic development activities now underway as part of the Wide Bay Burnett Centres of Enterprise initiative launched by Minister Mickel in March this year.

“Centres of Enterprise is about looking at Queensland’s major regions and identifying those sectors that have the greatest potential to really grow and transform local economies,” he said.

“For Wide Bay Burnett those sectors are clearly initially general aviation and unmanned aerial vehicles.”

Mr Fenlon said Flight Training Group’s recent decision to build a multimillion dollar professional airline pilot training facility in Maryborough was testament to the strength of the local industry.

“We’ve already got companies like Seabird, Dean Wilson, Jabiru, Camit and Microair all designing and building aircraft and avionics of the future with expertise you won’t find anywhere else in the world,” he said.

“And then when you add the Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation now using Kingaroy Airport as its testing facility for unmanned aerial vehicles there’s no denying that the sky’s the limit in terms of where this industry can go over the next few years.”

Mr Fenlon will officially open the airshow on behalf of Queensland Premier Peter Beattie at 10am today.
