Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
ISIS CANE REGION BOOSTED BY PROPERTY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin today announced a Property Management Systems Initiative project for the Isis region to boost profitability and sustainability in the cane industry.
“The proposal came from Canegrowers Isis in partnership with the Isis Central Sugar Mill to assist growers integrate and improve on existing farm management systems,” Mr Mulherin said.
“The project will help growers improve their on-farm management of natural resources, encourage adoption of best management practices and provide a consistent, voluntary basis for meeting statutory and non-statutory requirements.”
The three-year project will be rolled out with the assistance of a Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries officer, based in the Canegrowers office in Childers.
“The DPI&F officer will help growers identify and develop systems for district-wide improvement, and implement activities such as training programs,” Mr Mulherin said.
“We aim to have 50 per cent of Isis growers using a property or farm management systems framework within their business management structure as a result of this project.
“This is the second Property Management Systems Initiative project approved by DPI&F to benefit the state’s sugar cane industry - the previous one being for the Mackay/Whitsunday area.
“With the price of sugar continuing to fall, it is essential that we help growers implement new systems that will help maintain their viability.
"The Property Management Systems Initiative is a key project for the Department under the Queensland Government's Blueprint for the Bush to support rural Queensland," Mr Mulherin said.
The Isis project will build on the Isis Target 100 productivity initiative to develop integrated, grower driven management systems.
The project will be supported by the strong partnerships developed between Canegrowers Isis, Isis Central Sugar Mill, Isis Productivity Ltd, BSES Ltd, Burnett Mary Regional Group for NRM and government agencies for the adoption of sustainable and profitable sugar cane production.
The dairy industry also has benefited from the initiative with an appointment earlier this year of a project officer and negotiations are ongoing between the Department and other industry organisations and regional natural resource management groups on projects under the PMSI.
