Noosa and Port Douglas retain unique character under new councils: Fraser
Local Government and Planning Minister Andrew Fraser has denied claims today that the Noosa and Port Douglas areas will lose their unique international appeal once councils in the region are amalgamated.
Mr Fraser said it was irresponsible to suggest the areas would become over-developed under merged councils.
“In fact, the situation will be quite the opposite, with stronger councils to protect planning in these unique areas - I guarantee that the unique characteristics of Noosa and Port Douglas can and will be protected,” Mr Fraser said.
“Stronger councils will mean we will not see repeats of the disastrous situation in Miriam Vale for example, as reported by the Ombudsman last year.
“The creation of the Sunshine Coast and Cairns Regional Councils will result in more rigorous and efficient development assessment and local planning.
“The existing Noosa Shire planning scheme and Douglas Shire planning scheme will remain in force beyond the election of the new councils next year.
“The new regional councils will then be required to create new consolidated planning schemes that combine the former planning schemes into a single, cohesive document.
“These new planning schemes will be required to be prepared in accordance with the Integrated Planning Act, in consultation with the State Government and the community.
“The government will work with the new regional councils to ensure the local and regional values that identify Douglas and Noosa are carried forward into the new consolidated planning schemes. If necessary the State Government can direct any council to change, amend or condition a planning scheme to ensure relevant interests are protected.
“Additionally, councils are required to release their draft planning schemes publicly for community consultation and comment.
“Ultimately, the planning schemes will come before the Minister for consideration and also – where it is deemed necessary – to impose conditions to ensure the local and regional character and concerns have been adequately taken into account.
“The Minister also has the power to call in inappropriate development and this government has a solid track record in doing just that as well as establishing smart and appropriate planning to protect our iconic areas.”
Mr Fraser said the Beattie Government had a proven track record in calling in inappropriate development including:
- The development application for The Edge at Kin Kin in the Noosa Shire
- The Montville Golf Links in the Maroochy Shire
