$150,000 to help Mount Isa gamblers with counselling, support

The Queensland Government has committed more than $157,000 for counselling and support services to help Mount Isa gamblers, their families and the community overcome the negative effects of gambling.

Communities Minister Warren Pitt said Centacare would receive $157,054 to continue the Gambling Help services in Mount Isa for a further 12 months.

Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said the funding was part of a $1 million allocation to continue the Gambling Help services in Cairns, Townsville, Mt Isa, Rockhampton, central Queensland and Mackay.

She said a further $1.2 million had also been announced for Logan, Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, along with the continuation of the statewide Gambling Help Network.

“While responsible gambling is enjoyed by many Queenslanders, for others, gambling can have devastating consequences including financial ruin and relationship breakdowns,” Mrs Kiernan said.

“It is vital that people and families adversely affected by gambling have access to support services to get their lives in order.

“That is why the Department of Communities, in partnership with Queensland Treasury, has established the Gambling Help services across Queensland.

“This important Mount Isa service, which provides free and confidential counselling and support for individuals, families and groups in a safe, confidential and accepting environment, will now continue for a further 12 months thanks to this funding allocation.”

Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was committed to reducing the occurrence of problem gambling and the impacts of problem gambling on individuals and communities.

The statewide Gambling Help Line is available on 1800 222 050 for confidential 24-hour telephone counselling and referrals.
