$200,000 to help Townsville gamblers with counselling, support

The Queensland Government has committed more than $200,000 for counselling and support services to help north Queensland gamblers, their families and the community overcome the negative effects of gambling.

Communities Minister Warren Pitt said Centacare would receive $208,274 to continue the Gambling Help services in Townsville for a further 12 months.

“While responsible gambling is enjoyed by many Queenslanders, for others, gambling can have devastating consequences including financial ruin and relationship breakdowns,” Mr Pitt said.

“It is vital that people and families adversely affected by gambling have access to support services to get their lives in order.

“That is why the Department of Communities, in partnership with Queensland Treasury, has established the Gambling Help services across Queensland.

“This important north Queensland service, which provides free and confidential counselling and support for individuals, families and groups in a safe, confidential and accepting environment, will now continue for a further 12 months thanks to this funding allocation.”

The latest funding is part of a $1 million allocation to continue the Gambling Help services in Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Rockhampton, central Queensland and Mackay.

A further $1.2 million has also been announced for Logan, Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, along with the continuation of the state-wide Gambling Help Network.

Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was committed to reducing the occurrence of problem gambling and the impacts of problem gambling on individuals and communities.

The statewide Gambling Help Line is available on 1800 222 050 for confidential 24-hour telephone counselling and referrals.
