Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Warren Pitt
$2.2 million to help gamblers with counselling, support
The Queensland Government has committed more than $2.2 million for counselling and support services to help gamblers, their families and the community overcome the negative effects of gambling.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt said $1.2 million had been allocated to Relationships Australia to continue operating Gambling Help services in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Logan, along with the statewide Gambling Help Network, for 2007–08.
He said Relationships Australia, Centacare and Lifeline would also share a total of $1 million to continue Gambling Help services in Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Mackay, Rockhampton and central Queensland for another year.
“While responsible gambling is enjoyed by many Queenslanders, for others, gambling can have devastating consequences including financial ruin and relationship breakdowns,” Mr Pitt said.
“It is vital that people and families adversely affected by gambling have access to support services to get their lives in order.
“That is why the Department of Communities, in partnership with Queensland Treasury, has established the Gambling Help services across Queensland.
“These services, which provide free and confidential counselling and support for individuals, families and groups in a safe, confidential and accepting environment, will now continue for a further 12 months thanks to this funding allocation.”
Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was committed to reducing the occurrence of problem gambling and the effects of problem gambling on individuals and communities.
“These services will be delivered through a network of 13 Gambling Help services and the Gambling Help Line, established across the state in 2002,” he said.
The statewide Gambling Help Line is available on 1800 222 050 for confidential 24-hour telephone counselling and referrals.
