BIFF OPENS FOR 2007
Movie fans can enjoy an 11-day feast of film and filmmaking from tomorrow night with the opening of the 16th Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF).
Arts Minister Rod Welford will open the festival at the Regent Cinema in the Queen Street Mall, with the much-anticipated screening of Hal Hartley’s film Fay Grim.
“This year’s festival features 121 films from 47 countries, with screenings at venues across Brisbane and south-east Queensland,” Mr Welford said.
“It’s shaping up to be another successful year for BIFF, with pre-season ticket sales very strong.
“BIFF opens tomorrow night with Fay Grim and closes on Sunday 12 August with Michael Winterbottom’s film A Mighty Heart.
“BIFF is so much more than a smorgasbord of movies for entertainment’s sake – it is a chance to open a window on the world to witness the lives, experiences, cultures and challenges of other people.
“It is also about seeing the latest work from emerging and independent filmmakers who are the creative lifeblood of the film industry.”
Mr Welford said many screenings would be introduced by the filmmakers, with more than 30 guests from Australia and overseas travelling to Brisbane for the festival.
“Directors, producers, writers and actors will participate in question and answer sessions and a range of seminars about filmmaking to give their insights into the film industry,” he said.
“This year BIFF’s full program also includes the Queensland New Filmmakers awards for the first time, which reflects the strength of the film industry in this state.
“Film production in Queensland is at an all time high – just last week I announced another four new film and television productions.”
