PETERO’S STATE SELECTION FOR COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Brisbane Broncos stalwart Petero Civoniceva has been awarded Queensland’s 2007 Multicultural Achiever, recognising his outstanding contribution to the community.

Acting Multiculturalism Minister Rod Welford said Petero was nominated for the award as part of the annual program through Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ).

“The Queensland Multicultural Awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate, recognise and thank the many people and organisations who contribute to building Queensland’s reputation as a Smart, inclusive state," Mr Welford said.

“Multicultural Achievers are prominent Queenslanders from culturally diverse backgrounds who, through their profession, have made a significant contribution to Queensland as a vibrant and prosperous state.

“Petero has been a model representative for Queensland and Australia and through his outstanding achievements in rugby league, has helped promote and support multiculturalism in our community.”

Fijian-born Petero Civoniceva has played with the Brisbane Broncos since 1998 and is one of the NRL’s most formidable forwards.

The Queensland Multicultural Awards are open to all Queensland residents and Mr Welford encouraged the community to nominate individuals and groups who have worked towards improving our culturally diverse community.

“There are five different categories: Community Based Organisations, School (primary and secondary), Business (small and large), Government and Individual.

“Our State’s diversity is one of Queensland’s greatest social and economic assets and the Queensland Multicultural Awards is just one way of celebrating this in our community.
“It is important that we continue to support multiculturalism and develop as a welcoming, dynamic and forward-thinking community, enhancing Queensland’s standing as the Smart State,” he said.

Nominations for the 2007 Queensland Multicultural Awards are now open and close on 3 August.
