Queensland accounts for over a quarter of all new dwellings being built in Australia, according to just-released Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Deputy Premier and Treasurer Anna Bligh said this afternoon.

In June, Queensland’s 3,603 dwelling approvals accounted for 28.6% of total national dwelling approvals (12,610).

“Queensland is the only State to record an annual increase in housing approvals in June, while every other State recorded declines,” she said.

“Trend dwelling approvals in Queensland increased at an annual rate of 10.7% in June 2007, while approvals in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia fell 9.9%, 9.1% and 9.1% respectively,” Ms Bligh said.

“While I understand this is not good news for prospective home builders in other States, the facts are that our strong income and population growth, as well as low rental vacancies, are driving both new construction and renovations.”

“This is also good news for the thousands of Queenslanders employed in the housing and construction industry.

Private sector houses drove annual growth in the overall number of dwelling approvals in Queensland in June, with the number of private sector approvals increasing 14.8% in annual terms.

“We’re not-so-quietly confident that these positive conditions will continue, despite there being a possible interest rate rise in the next quarter.

“Today’s excellent results are yet another instance of Queensland’s strong economic fundamentals delivering for our communities,” Ms Bligh said.
