Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is continuing its support of the Queensland Council of Unions’ (QCU) push to help Indigenous people fully engage in the workplace.
Acting Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Desley Boyle said a grant of $91,500 would allow the QCU to employ an Indigenous Industrial Officer for another year.
“This will be the fifth year the Department has funded this position and it provides valuable information and contacts between government agencies, Indigenous workers and their employers,” Ms Boyle said.
“The officer will be able to work with the Department’s extensive network of Indigenous Employment and Training Support Officers and Managers which covers the state.”
QCU General Secretary Grace Grace said the officer’s work would address four main issues.
“The position will offer advice and support to the labour market and inform Indigenous employment policy,” Ms Grace said.
“It will also develop employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and liaise with government and employment agencies throughout Queensland.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
