North Queensland homeless services get $400,000 injection

The fight against homelessness in north Queensland was further strengthened today with the Queensland Government pledging more than $400,000 for services in the area for the next three years.

Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre in Ingham would receive $136,728 a year over three years to help tackle homelessness.

“This latest funding will enable the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre to continue to operate an important service for homeless people, as well as those at risk of homelessness, in the north,” Mr Pitt said.

“Local service providers are well placed to respond to the needs of homeless people in their own communities – that is why I am happy to continue to provide funding to this organisation to support its great work.

“This is also another example of how the Queensland Government is targeting funds to address homelessness across the State.”

Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government had developed a $235 million Responding to Homelessness strategy.

“The growing need for increased crisis accommodation and affordable housing options remains a significant priority for the Queensland Government,” he said.

”We have also established Homeless Persons Information Queensland, a free-call service providing information about housing, as well as advice, support and practical assistance.”

Homeless Person's Information Queensland is available on toll-free 1800 47 47 53.
