Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

FIRE AWARENESS WEEK 2007 BEGINS

Premier Peter Beattie and Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts have urged Queenslanders to take the initiative on fire safety, at the start of Fire Awareness Week 2007.

Mr Roberts will attend the state launch of Fire Awareness Week, which runs from July 29 to August 4, at the Durack Fire Station open day today (July 29).

“Fire Awareness Week highlights the need for everyone to be proactive and this year the theme is Don’t gamble with your family’s life,” Mr Beattie said.

“The week provides an opportunity for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service to focus on educating residents about fire safety, with particular emphasis on recent fire safety initiatives.

“As of July 1 this year, smoke alarms became compulsory in all residences across the state, and I urge everyone to take the time to install and maintain alarms.”

Mr Roberts said a small investment in time and money could pay great dividends.

“Queensland Fire and Rescue Service statistics show that the risk of death from fire for people living in homes without alarms is three times greater than those in homes with smoke alarms,” he said.

“For as little as $10, residents can introduce a simple safeguard into their homes that could be the difference between life and death.

“Some action now on fire safety could save your life, the lives of those you love, and your home and property.”

Just as important are other Queensland Fire and Rescue Service campaigns, such as encouraging residents to preparing escapes plan in the event of fire in the home and preparing for the bushfire season.

Fire Awareness Week also is an opportunity to showcase the skills of firefighters, Mr Roberts said.

“Our firefighters do great work day-in, day-out across Queensland,” he said.

“As well as responding to house and structural fires, they undertake other critical tasks including rescues, assisting in managing chemical spills, and conducting and managing inspection programs to ensure compliance with safety regulations in a range of public and private buildings.”

In the last decade, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has overseen numerous community initiatives, such as Fire Ed for junior students, Road Awareness and Accident Prevention for senior students, and Seniors’ Fire Ed for the elderly.

In the 2006-07 financial year, firefighters across Queensland attended a total of 65,389 incidents.
