SCHOOL BASEBALL STARS BATTLE FOR STATE HONOURS

School baseballers from all over Queensland have converged on Narangba, north of Brisbane, for the Queensland School Sport 15 years-and-under Baseball State Championships.

Teams from several Queensland school sporting regions will contest the championships at the Narangba Demons Baseball Club from today until Sunday 29 July.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the young baseball stars had been selected from thousands of hopefuls to represent their region at state level.

"More than 100 students will compete at the tournament and I want to congratulate each of them on their selection and wish them every success on the field," Mr Welford said.

"It's a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.

"I would also like to thank our dedicated teachers and school staff who have given considerable time and effort to make the championships a success."

Mr Welford said six of Queensland’s 12 sporting regions would field teams at this year's championships – Metropolitan North, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan East, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.

“In addition, a special President’s team will compete at the event, made up mostly of representatives from the Wide Bay region,” he said.

“Teams will play six games in a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams playing off in the final on Sunday.

“I wish all players an enjoyable tournament – I am sure they will do their region proud.”
