PREMIER CALLS SPECIAL CABINET MEETING TO DISCUSS THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM COMMISSION REPORT
Premier Peter Beattie said today he would call a special meeting of the Queensland Cabinet on Friday (July 27) to discuss the recommendations of the Local Government Reform Commission.
“The Minister for Local Government, Andrew Fraser, has been advised by the Commission that the report will be provided on Friday,” Mr Beattie said.
“After receiving the report on Friday morning the Cabinet will consider its recommendation on local government boundaries.
“Following the Cabinet meeting there will also be a meeting of Caucus to allow local members to be briefed on the recommendations.
“There will be a detailed briefing of Mayors, other stakeholders and the media immediately following the Cabinet meeting.
“The report, its recommendations and indicative maps will be made public at midday on Friday.
“The report will be released on the internet to allow for public scrutiny of the Commission’s recommendations.
“The Minister and I will be traveling across Queensland to discuss the Commission's recommendations with any affected communities.
“There will be a debate in the Queensland Parliament of the legislation which will be required to put in place any new boundaries."
Invitations to mayors and other stakeholders will be sent this afternoon for Friday morning’s briefing at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
