Local Government Reform Commission to hand over report on Friday: Fraser

The Local Government Reform Commission will hand over its report containing recommendations on Queensland council boundaries changes this Friday, July 27.

Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser said the Reform Commission Chair Bob Longland had today written to him advising the report would be returned from printers and available to the government from July 27.

“We will be releasing the report to everyone on the same day,” Mr Fraser said.

“The government gave an undertaking that at the time of the handover by the Reform Commission, the report would be made public.

“On Friday we will make good on that commitment when the Commission delivers its recommendations to the Premier and I by making the report public, both on the internet and in hard copy form.

“The report will be released to councils and Mayors and stakeholders along with the media on Friday morning.

“Mr Longland and the six other Commissioners have been tasked with undertaking a thorough and wide-ranging review of local government boundaries and, like all Queenslanders in every corner of the state, I greatly anticipate the findings of their report.”

A copy of Mr Longland’s written advice to Mr Fraser is attached, and a transcript follows below also.

Dear Minister

I am writing to advise the Commission has completed its deliberations in relation to new local government arrangements for Queensland.

Its report, together with recommendations regarding the structure, classes, names and electoral arrangements for each local government, is currently with the printer.

I would expect to be in a position to hand the report to the Government on Friday 27 July 2007.

Yours Sincerely

Bob Longland

Chair
