NEW TAFE CAMPUS ON CAPRICORN COAST

Yeppoon’s new $2.75 million TAFE campus has welcomed its first intake of students.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the newest campus of the Central Queensland Institute of TAFE would provide students with state-of-the-art learning facilities.

“More than 160 students have already started courses at the new campus,” Mr Welford said.

“The campus will offer courses in fitness, hospitality, horticulture, business, information technology, childcare, aged care, art and restricted electrical licence preparation.

“TAFE will also work closely with the community to identify and offer other priority training areas which are needed to meet the requirements of local business and industry.

“The new complex consists of two computer labs, a multipurpose room, a storage shed and a conference room which converts into three seminar rooms.

“The facilities at the Yeppoon campus have been designed with the environment in mind, incorporating features to maximise natural light and air flow – reducing reliance on electricity and air conditioning.”

The State Government provided $1.65 million to build the new facilities, and the Federal Government contributed $1.1 million.

Mr Welford said investing in TAFE infrastructure was a core component of the Beattie Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan.

“The Queensland Skills Plan aims to ensure the state’s vocational education and training system is world class and the supply of skilled labour better matches industry needs,” he said.

Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan welcomed the investment in training infrastructure for the Capricorn Coast.

“This facility will play an important role in the continued growth and development of the region,” Mr Hoolihan said.

“The TAFE campus will provide excellent learning outcomes for students and it will help to boost the skills base of the local community.

“This new building provides a dynamic learning environment with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities including video conferencing equipment.”

Staff and students have operated from leased premises at Housden Place for 19 years. The new campus is located at 26 Tabone Street, adjacent to Yeppoon State High School.
