Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
PREMIER URGES EXPORTERS TO SEEK OPPORTUNITIES IN MALAYSIA
Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie has encouraged Queensland businesses to make contact with a high-level trade delegation from Malaysia at a business opportunities seminar in Brisbane on 1 August 2007.
“I am delighted that Malaysian Minister for Trade and Investment Dato’ Seri Rafidah binti Aziz is leading a trade mission to Queensland to investigate collaborative opportunities," Mr Beattie said.
“The seminar on business opportunities in Malaysia will provide Queensland companies with direct business-to-business links into the Malaysian market.”
Mr Beattie said the 50-strong mission, including private sector representatives and senior officials from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysian Industrial Development Authority, Malaysian Trade and Development Corporation and State Governments, would further strengthen the business and investment links with the Smart State.
“Malaysia is Queensland’s 15th biggest trading partner,” Mr Beattie said.
“Our trading relationship is very strong, with Queensland exporting goods worth about $474.4 million to Malaysia in 2005-2006, dominated by agricultural products, minerals and machineries, and we are broadening that base to include Information and Communications Technology,” Mr Beattie said.
Mr Beattie said a number of Queensland companies are already doing business within Malaysia.
“We see the future for job creation, investment and exports as lying increasingly with knowledge-intensive industries, a view shared by Malaysia.’’
The Malaysian trade mission is expected to update Queensland businesses on the current status of the Malaysia Australia Free Trade agreement negotiations.
