Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine

Gate shutting for fence law review feedback

Time is running out to have your say on the review of Queensland's dividing fences laws, Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said today.

Mr Shine said the Queensland Government has released a discussion paper about the Dividing Fences Act 1953 to improve neighbourly relations by reducing the incidence of conflicts over fences.

"Since the 1950s, our society has changed a great deal.  We want feedback from the community about whether the legislation meets expectations and the needs of our community in the 21st century," Mr Shine said.

"Fences are one of the most common causes of disputes between neighbours and the review has attracted strong interest."

"Submissions close on 26 July."

"Hundreds of written submissions have been received from individuals, associations and local councils.  Almost 300 people have used the on-line survey at www.getinvolved.qld.gov.au/consultqld."

"Members of the public have attended forums in Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Warwick, Ipswich and the Gold Coast and they have provided very useful feedback based on their own experiences."

The final public forum is at the Public Works Building, Room 1 Main Entrance, 80 George Street, Brisbane from 10am to 12 noon tomorrow (25 July).
