$750,000 for Townsville courthouse design development

The Queensland Government has committed $750,000 for the design development of the Townsville courthouse, Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said today.

Visiting Townsville courthouse for the swearing-in of Magistrate Peter Smid today, Mr Shine said the funding was allocated for 2007-08 as part of the Government's commitment to ensure the justice needs of Townsville's growing population were met.

Mr Shine said local Members of Parliament, Mike Reynolds (Townsville), Lindy Nelson-Carr (Mundingburra) and Craig Wallace (Thuringowa), had asked former Attorney-General linda Lavarch to conduict the architectural study.

"Last year, an options study was commissioned to assess whether it was feasible and cost effective to refurbish and extend the two buildings.  This second study will develop the work from last year in more detail," Mr Shine said.

"The Townsville courthouse is one of the largest courthouses in regional Queensland."

"The two court buildings wre built in the early 1970s, but we need to be mindful of the current and future needs of the Townsville region."

Mr Shine said users of the courthouses, Judges, Magistrates and court staff will consulted during the design development process.
