Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology
The Honourable Robert Schwarten
FUNDS FOR SPEAKERS AT ROMA WAR MEMORIAL
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten today announced the Queensland Government will partner with the Roma Town Council to refurbish the Roma and Bungil war memorial.
Mr Schwarten said a $12,500 grant from the Department of Public Works’ Community Memorials Restoration Program would go towards the installation of a public address system at the memorial.
He said the government supported the Roma Town Council’s plan to better cater for the community’s needs at ANZAC Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day services.
“This is a wonderful granite and marble cenotaph commemorating those who gave their lives in wartime. Roma Town Council has maintained it well since it was built in 1938,” Mr Schwarten said.
“With the Bottle Trees along the Avenue of Hero’s, the memorial is great source of pride for the community, so we’re happy to partner with the Roma Town Council to install the new speaker system.”
Around Queensland, 46 communities will share in more than $576,000 in subsidy funds from the Community Memorial Restoration Program in the 2007-2008 round of grants.
Since 2004, the Program has funded 144 projects across the State providing a total of $1.22 million in dollar-for-dollar subsidies to councils and community organisations to help restore local monuments and other icons.
