NANANGO CEMETERY TO GET NEW LEASE ON LIFE

Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten today announced Nanango Shire Council would receive an $8,110 Queensland Government grant to digitise the Shire’s cemetery records and restore and repair some important headstones.

Mr Schwarten said the grant, from the Department of Public Works’ Community Memorials Restoration Program, would also help vandal-proof a new map and markers, and restore the fence at the cemetery.

“Not only will this project make the cemetery more accessible to visitors, it will also enable important historical information to be made available on the web,” Mr Schwarten said.

“The Government understands local authorities and the community can find it difficult to meet all the costs of restoring and maintaining special sites like these, so we are happy to partner with the Nanango Shire Council to ensure their history of settlement is preserved for future generations.”

Mr Schwarten said around Queensland, 46 communities would share in more than $576,000 in subsidy funds from the Community Memorial Restoration Program in the 2007-2008 round of grants.

“Since 2004, the Program has funded 144 projects across the State providing a total of $1.22 million in dollar-for-dollar subsidies to councils and community organisations to help restore local monuments and other icons,” he said.
