Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence

HANEEF’S INTENSIVE MANAGEMENT PLAN REVIEWED

The Intensive Management Plan of prisoner Dr Mohammed Haneef has been reviewed, Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said today.

Ms Spence said minor changes had been made to the plan, governing the conditions of Dr Haneef’s imprisonment.

“Since arriving at the Wolston Correctional Centre, Dr Haneef has undergone an extensive risk assessment process, the same as all prisoners,” Ms Spence said.

“Inmates can experience extreme emotional stress upon arrival at a correctional centre, and Corrective Services provide appropriate support to ensure the risk of self harm is managed accordingly.

“Mr Haneef is now being held in isolation in the Detention Unit, with access to a private exercise yard between 7:30am and 6:30pm.

“He has been provided with prison issue clothing and bedding, and items including a notepad, magazines and books, religious items and a television.

“He is allowed telephone calls, as well as personal and legal visits.”

Ms Spence said the Director General of Queensland Corrective Services, Frank Rockett, is responsible for approving the intensive management plans of all prisoners detained under the Terrorism (Preventative Detention) Act 2005.

“Mr Rockett has approved Dr Haneef’s updated plan, and will also be required to approve any future alterations,” Ms Spence said.

“Factors taken into account when conducting such reviews include: the offences for which the prisoner has been charged or convicted; the prisoner’s behaviour in relation to the charges or convictions; any violent behaviour being exhibited; the prisoner’s risk of self harm and harm to others; and health or mental health assessment regarding the prisoner.”

Ms Spence said the Director-General, together with the Executive Director of Custodial, interviewed Dr Haneef in person today.

“Dr Haneef reported that he had no complaints, felt safe and was being treated well,” Ms Spence said.

Dr Haneef’s Intensive Management plan will be reviewed again on or before August 7, 2007.
