New sports stadium opens at University of the Sunshine Coast
Sport and recreation facilities on the Sunshine Coast have been given a significant boost thanks to funding from the State Government.
Sport Minister Andrew Fraser today attended the opening of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s new multi-sport stadium.
Mr Fraser said the new facility would enhance the opportunities for sport and active recreation among the community of Maroochy Shire.
“The Queensland Government has contributed $2.9 miilion in funding towards the construction of the stadium,” Mr Fraser said.
“Education Queensland contributed $2 million, and the Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation provided $900,000.
“This funding went towards the construction of a multi-sport, three-court, indoor facility incorporating multi-purpose rooms, canteen facilities, an official’s room, first aid room, air conditioning, retractable seating and electronic scoreboards.
Mr Fraser said the centre would encourage students and locals to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle as well as to fight rising levels of obesity.
“The new centre will enable people to participate in a range of healthy activities and will make a positive contribution to life in Maroochy Shire.
“The Queensland Government is committed to helping local councils and community organisations improve and enhance opportunities for sport and active recreation and we are proud to be able to contribute to this project.
“If we keep supporting our community organisations by providing funding and infrastructure for projects such as this, we will ensure that our local communities have quality facilities for sport and active recreation.”
