MITCHELL HILL TO BE OFFICIALLY NAMED FOR WW1 VETERANS

Natural Resources Minister Craig Wallace has invited local residents to have their say on the official naming of “Mitchell Hill” at Doonan on the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Wallace said the department had been approached by a local resident to officially name the geographical feature Mitchell Hill after two local farmers who served in the First World War.

“Mitchell Hill rises steeply from its base at the Noosa Valley Golf Club on Wust Road to its peak on Sunrise Road, approximately 145 metres above sea level,” Mr Wallace said.

“The name ‘Mitchell Hill’ has apparently been used by the local community for generations.

“Local residents say the feature was named after Harold and Allan Mitchell, brothers who once owned and farmed all of the property from what is now Noosa Valley Golf Club, west to Sunrise Road.

“They say the brothers served during the First World War in the 5th Light Horse in the Middle East from 1915 to 1918.”

The Department of Natural Resources and Water administers the Place Names Act 1994, which officially controls the naming of localities, suburbs and geographical features in local government areas.

A plan illustrating the proposal can be viewed at the Department of Natural Resources and Water, Ground Floor, Centenary Building, Currie Street, Nambour, Maroochy Shire Council, corner of Currie and Bury Streets, Eumundi Post Office and at the Nambour Library.

Individual written submissions on the proposal can be lodged with the Regional Service Director, South East Region, Ipswich Office, Department of Natural Resources and Water, PO Box 864, Ipswich Qld 4305 until 28 September 2007.
