OAKEY SUBSTATION UPGRADE SUPPORTS REGIONAL GROWTH

Work being undertaken by Powerlink Queensland to upgrade the Oakey Substation is a significant investment in the future of Oakey and surrounding areas, Minister for Mines and Energy, Geoff Wilson, said today.

“This new energy infrastructure is essential to help meet and sustain growth in the region and to support important community services and facilities,” Mr Wilson said.

“The upgrade will include the construction of an additional substation within the boundaries of the existing Oakey Substation property.

“It is due to be completed by mid 2008.

“The upgrade to the substation will ensure a reliable high voltage electricity supply is maintained to the Oakey area.

“Electricity demand in the region is forecast to grow at around 3.3% a year due to residential, commercial and industrial development,” he said.

Powerlink’s Chief Executive, Gordon Jardine said construction of the new substation began in June, with the first stage of earthworks due to be finished this month.

“This will be followed by electrical construction works to establish steel structures, electrical equipment and ancillary buildings,” Mr Jardine said.

“In conjunction with the Oakey Substation upgrade, Powerlink will also be undertaking further work to construct a short section of new power line to connect the substation to the Oakey Power Station.”

Mr Jardine said all works being undertaken at the substation were guided by a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP), which included measures to help minimise any inconvenience to neighbouring residents.

Mr Jardine thanked the Oakey community for their understanding and patience while the work was being completed.
