Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
$750,000 GRANT TO HELP 100 BRIBIE ISLAND AND DECEPTION BAY JOBSEEKERS
The Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will assist 100 jobseekers from Bribie Island and Deception Bay to help them learn new skills and find employment
Acting Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Desley Boyle and Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan said a $756,680 grant would fund the first year of a three-year arrangement with CADET Employment and Training.
“Thanks to this agreement CADET are in a better position to plan and organise a mix of accredited and job preparation training and paid work placements that will suit the needs of local jobseekers,” Ms Boyle said.
“The grant will fund 60 accredited training places and 40 paid work placements but the project will also include recognition of prior learning, work experience, job preparation training and post-placement support.
“This flexibility will ensure participants have access to the training they need to gain meaningful employment and help the local economy. This three-year agreement will be a fantastic boost for the local community as well.”
Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan said the project will help jobseekers from a variety of backgrounds get the assistance they need.
“There is a shortage of training and employment services and opportunities in this region,” Ms Sullivan said.
“This project will bring valuable experience and connections which will see Job Network members from Caboolture operating an outreach service from CADET’s office on Bribie Island as well as linking with the Deception Bay Training and Employment Network.
“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.
“Programs like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”
CADET Branch Manager Trish Stone said participants will first be assessed to determine what their current skills are and to develop an individual assistance package.
“The project is focussing on building/construction/labouring, landscaping and events management/administration skills,” Mrs Stone said.
“Participants can complete a Certificate I in Business or a pre-vocational Certificate I in Construction and earn a Construction Blue Card.
“We will offer 30 work placements on Bribie Island, 20 working on construction and landscaping projects and 10 places working on the Bribie Island Fun Festival. The 10 Deception Bay places will also help participants learn new skills in construction and landscaping.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 122,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
