FUNDING BOOST FOR TOWNSVILLE RUNNING FESTIVAL: PREMIER

Premier Peter Beattie has announced a State Government funding boost of $15,000 to support the Townsville Running Festival and help it grow bigger and better in coming years.

Mr Beattie said the innovations scheme funding would be provided under the very successful Queensland Events Regional Development Program.

"In its 35-year history the Townsville Festival has gone through many changes but it has emerged as a popular community celebration with great potential," Mr Beattie said.

"It now offers a range of events that aim to get people of all ages and fitness levels involved in physical activity," he said.

"This grant will enable organisers to develop comprehensive business and marketing plans which will help make this year's 9th annual Townsville Running Festival on August 5 the best yet."

Member for Townsville Mike Reynolds welcomed the announcement and congratulated the organisers, the Townsville Road Runners, for their successful grant application.

"It was a standard marathon between 1972 and 1998, but now the Townsville Running Festival includes races from 2km to 42 km and appeals to people from as young as 9 to over 70 years," Mr Reynolds said.

"Thanks to the support of many local businesses, the event also offers attractive prize money," he said.

"Participants have blossomed too in recent years and now include juniors, families, corporate teams and even some well-known athletes."

The Beattie Government’s Queensland Events Regional Development Program has provided more than 420 events with approximately $8.9 million since it started as a world first initiative in June 2001.
