Disability services expand into Belyando/Broadsound area

People with a disability in the Belyando/Broadsound area are set to enjoy a better quality of life, with Disability Services Queensland expanding its successful Local Area Coordination (LAC) Program.

Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt said the LAC Program was a departure from the traditional approach taken by the department, which was either to provide, or directly fund, a range of disability services.

“We have had enormous success with the Local Area Coordination Program right across the state, so I am delighted to see it expanding into new areas,” Mr Pitt said.

“Ros Jackson had been appointed to provide LAC coverage across Belyando Shire and the south-western section of Broadsound Shire.

“Ros has a broad knowledge of the local supports, services, community groups and activities. She will work with people with a disability and the broader community to bring about positive changes that help them participate more fully in their local communities.”

Mr Pitt said DSQ was working to establish an LAC office at one of the hinterland townships.

He said local area coordinators helped people with a disability, their families and their carers to develop more supportive connections within their own community.

“It’s all about fostering community networks and connecting people with the local community, to bring about positive changes and a better quality of life,” Mr Pitt said.

“While the job of an LAC can be demanding, it is certainly very rewarding to help develop a community that is welcoming and supportive of people with a disability.”

DSQ staged a series of information sessions in Moranbah, Dysart, Clermont and Middlemount to explain the LAC program to people with a disability, families and community organisations.
