Powerful boost for Gold Coast-Beaudesert homes and businesses

More than 17,000 homes and businesses throughout Beaudesert Shire and the Gold Coast hinterland will benefit from a $4 million upgrade to electricity supplies in the area.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the recent commissioning of a new transformer at Energex’s Beaudesert substation would more than double available capacity for electricity distribution throughout the region.

Mr Wilson said the Gold Coast City-Beaudesert Shire area was one of Energex’s fastest growth areas and in the past two years the company had spent more than $200 million upgrading the region’s electricity network.

“The substation upgrade will ensure Energex keeps ahead of current and predicted growth in demand for electricity, a demand that has seen local summer power usage increase by more than 30% in the last four years,” said Mr Wilson.

“Importantly the project also provides Energex technicians more options to restore power faster should unexpected damage to the network occur.

Areas that benefit from the upgrade include Beaudesert, Cainbable, Canungra, Cryna, Kerry, Nindooinbah, Tabragalba, Ilbogan, Allenview, Cedar Vale, Gleneagle, Veresdale, Woodhill, Jimboomba, Mundoolun, Benoble, Biddaddaba, Birnam, Boyland, Wonglepong, Bromelton, Josephville, Kooralbyn, Laravale, Wyaralong, Cedar Grove, Woodhill, Buccan, Logan Village, Stockleigh, Kagaru, North Maclean, South Maclean, Undullah, Chambers Flat, Logan Reserve, Munruben, Barney View, Chinghee Creek, Innisplain, Lake Maroon, Lamington, Maroon, Mt Lindesay, Palen Creek, Rathdowney, Running Creek, Tamrookum, Knapp Creek, Tabooba, Darlington, Hillview, Oaky Creek, Mount Tamborine, North Tamborine, Eagle Heights, Clagiraba, Guanaba, Maudsland, Mount Nathan, Upper Coomera, Beechmont, Illinbah, Lower Beechmont, Pine Creek and Witheren.

The project is part of a record $3 billion-plus five-year capital expenditure program currently being undertaken by Energex. This year Energex is investing $827 million on upgrades to its electricity network while a further $293 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – that’s an overall average of more than $3 million a day.

Energex supplies electricity to around 2.8 million people in south east Queensland through more than 50,000 km of overhead and underground power lines. The company’s distribution area includes over 600,000 power poles, some 42,000 transformers and more than 295,000 street lights.
