Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
The number of enrolled voters in Queensland could reach 3 million by 2016 based on the current rate of people joining the electoral roll, Attorney-General Kerry Shine said.
Mr Shine, who has ministerial responsibility for the Electoral Commission of Queensland, said an extra 220,000 people enrolled to vote over the last five years taking total enrolments to more than 2.5 million.
“Over the last five years, enrolments in Queensland have grown by almost 10%,” Mr Shine said.
“This is yet another measure of Queensland’s strong population growth. One in five Australians live in Queensland.”
“If the rate of voter enrolment growth continues, the Electoral Commission of Queensland expects more than 3 million people will be enrolled to vote in Queensland by 2015 or 2016.”
“I urge all Queenslanders aged over 18 years of age to ensure they are enrolled to vote and to cast their vote at each election.”
People seeking assistance with enrolment can contact the Electoral Commission of Queensland or the Australian Electoral Commission or obtain an enrolment form from the Australia Post office.
The Electoral Commission of Queensland can be contacted on 1300 881 665, while the Australian Electoral Commission can be contacted on 13 23 26.
