Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
EXPORTERS LEARNING TO PROTECT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: PREMIER
Queensland exporters have the opportunity to learn about protecting their intellectual property in international markets at a half-day workshop offered by the Queensland Government, Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie announced today.
Mr Beattie said the Contract Negotiations and Intellectual Property master class would be delivered by law firm Clayton Utz.
“Presenter Anna Sharpe, a partner at Clayton Utz, has written several legal texts covering technology contracts and credit laws and she has considerable knowledge about the challenges facing companies in tapping into, protecting and generating export returns,” Mr Beattie said.
“These are issues that all exporters, manufacturers and service providers should know about when dealing with overseas markets.”
Exporter education is a key feature of the Queensland Government’s Export Strategy Driving Export Growth for Queensland: 2006-2011 which has been designed to continue developing the Smart State’s export sector.
Workshop participants will learn about a range of issues including:
• protecting brands and logos
• patents and protecting valuable assets
• factors to consider when negotiating contracts
• distribution/reseller/agency structures
• structuring pricing and payment
• product liability issues
• confidentiality agreements
• due diligence on potential partners.
The 3-4 hour master class will be held in conjunction with State Development Centres across the Smart State. Mackay, Cairns, Wide Bay-Burnett, Sunshine Coast, Northside, Toowoomba, Southside and the Gold Coast will each host a session, with the first to be held on 14 August in Mackay.
The master class series is designed to enhance the practical skills of new and existing exporters, providing them with an opportunity to learn from industry experts. The cost is $33.
