The Honourable Rod Welford
BLACKALL TOWN HALL UPGRADE TO BENEFIT YOUTH
The Blackall community will gain a dedicated space for young people to engage in creative industries and art activities, Arts Minister Rod Welford announced today.
Mr Welford said the Beattie Government would provide more than $109,820 to redevelop Blackall’s old Town Hall into a youth arts facility and studio space.
“My department will provide $48,450 through the Gritty Places Partnership Program. A further $39,777 will come from the Department of Families, Community Service and Indigenous Affairs, while the Gambling Community Fund will provide $21,593,” Mr Welford said.
“The Gritty Places Partnership Program is making a difference to artists and communities throughout the state by transforming old and disused buildings into creative and active spaces.
“SpeakOut Limited - an agency that addresses issues of self-worth, poverty and unemployment among young people - will manage the Blackall venue and work with local teenagers and young people to develop their skills in multimedia and design.”
Mr Welford said the redeveloped Town Hall would be an excellent space for young people to hone their artistic skills.
“The space will become a creative and social hub for the local youth in Blackall,” he said.
“From 2005 to 2009, the Government is providing $200,000 a year through the Gritty Places Partnership Program to help local councils and community groups convert old council buildings into arts venues.
“Local councils can apply for grants of up to $50,000 per location to develop a Gritty Places project.
“Applicants need to demonstrate their financial commitment by at least matching the funding sought from the Government.”
Other Gritty Places projects to receive funding in the 2006-07 financial year include the redevelopment of a tank at Cairns’ Tanks Art Centre and renovation of an old council building at Julia Creek into an arts facility.
Applications for the next round of funding close on 28 September 2007. For more information about Gritty Places, visit www.arts.qld.gov.au or call (07) 3235 4043.
