STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY FUNDING

Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Students at state schools from Cooktown to Cunnamulla will benefit from a $3 million Beattie Government election commitment to provide additional chaplaincy services.
Premier Peter Beattie said 131 eligible primary and secondary schools would receive grants from $5000 under the Chaplaincy/Pastoral Care program to complement existing welfare programs, such as guidance and counselling.
“Chaplaincy and additional pastoral care programs will add a further dimension to the support programs available in schools,” Mr Beattie said.
“Before the election last year, I made a commitment to provide extra funding for chaplaincy and pastoral care services at schools where it was needed most.
“Under the program, larger schools in the more disadvantaged areas of the state have been allocated this funding.
“Schools with more than 410 students will receive $30,000 over three years and schools with between 100 and 409 students will receive $15,000 over three years.
“They will receive the grant to employ or increase the support available from a chaplain, pastoral care coordinator, youth support coordinator or youth worker.”
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the State Government was committed to creating safe and supportive school environments for all students.
“Young people need stability and access to a range of support services during their school years,” Mr Welford said.
“They can experience stress as they mature, striving to keep up with school work while coping with peer pressure, the traps of drug and alcohol abuse, and dealing with changing family relationships.
“Students who have support during stressful times are more likely to achieve better results at school. They need someone they can trust to talk to about their problems and concerns. Ideally, this person should be independent from the school.”
Chaplaincy services already are offered in 240 Queensland state schools.
This program will help schools to improve or establish services to cater for the spiritual and/or ethical needs of students.
The $3 million three-year funding package will be used to employ people from the local community, contributing to boosting the employment and economy of communities statewide. Schools also may be able to supplement this funding through the Federal Government’s chaplaincy program.
