Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Extra $450,000 for community support organisation
An important community support organisation will get an extra $450,000 in Queensland Government funding to continue its vital work as an advocate for those affected by poverty, homelessness and other community issues.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt announced today that the Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) would receive an extra $200,000 a year for the next two years and a further $50,000 in 2009.
“QCOSS is the statewide organisation leading the way on issues facing the community, social and health sectors,” Mr Pitt said.
“Importantly, the council provides a voice for Queenslanders affected by poverty and all sorts of inequality.
“This latest funding will specifically contribute to operational and IT support costs, along with providing additional funds for salaries.”
The funding will take QCOSS through to September 2009, when a new funding arrangement will be negotiated with the Department of Communities.
Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was a strong supporter of QCOSS.
“The Department of Communities provides QCOSS with annual core funding of $236,620,” he said.
“This brings the total amount of core funding provided to QCOSS by the department to $436,620 a year.
“In addition, the department assists the council by providing office accommodation. I am confident that this funding will enable QCOSS to continue its excellent work.”
