Salvos get $3.6 million to continue support for Brisbane’s homeless

The Queensland Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting homeless people in Brisbane with a $3.6 million funding boost for the Salvation Army.

Communities Minister Warren Pitt said that during the next three years, the Salvation Army would receive more than $1.13 million a year for the Pindari Men’s Hostel and $64,400 a year for the Pindari Women’s Hostel.

Mr Pitt said the Department of Communities had an ongoing funding commitment with the Salvation Army and this latest allocation would enable the continuation of an important community service for some of Brisbane’s most vulnerable people.

“This funding will help the Salvation Army provide crisis accommodation for single men and women aged 18 years and over,” he said.

“Both hostels are located in Spring Hill and contain accommodation for up to 152 people, including 86 single rooms.

“Besides getting a roof over their head, homeless people at either hostel will also be able to enjoy a hot meal and access to counselling and other support services.”

Mr Pitt said the Department of Communities funding would also help employ a coordinator, two nurses, eight social support staff and evening workers at the men’s hostel.

“The Salvation Army has received Queensland Government funding for many years and this latest allocation will ensure the Pindari hostels can continue to assist and support clients for another three years,” he said.

“This government remains committed to helping Queenslanders who are at risk of, or are experiencing, homelessness to achieve positive and sustainable change in their lives.”

The funding forms part of the Queensland Government’s $235.52 million Responding to Homelessness Strategy, which aims to reduce the incidence of homelessness and to help people to find the pathway to long-term, stable accommodation.
