Honouring an election promise the Beattie Government will not allow a proposed high-rise development on a vital piece of park and recreation reserve beside the Airlie Beach Lagoon, Minister for Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace said today.

“A joint venture had proposed a four-storey integrated development, including 63 private residential units, on the site between the lagoon and Airlie Creek, but it will not happen,” said Mr Wallace.

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said that the proposed high-rise development provoked strong local opposition - particularly from the Save Our Foreshore group.

“In the last term the Beattie Government made it clear that it would take account of community views in considering any development over the foreshore.

“I’m pleased to say it has listened and responded. This is a good outcome,” she said.
