Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

PREMIER ANNOUNCES CLEAN COAL COUNCIL MEMBERS

A high-level council of business, industry, government and academia representatives has been established to help implement the development of ground breaking clean coal technology in the Smart State.

Premier Peter Beattie said development of this new technology would be a key weapon in the fight against climate change,

“Our Government is working with the coal industry to research and identify technologies that will ensure coal can continue to be used as a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy production,” Mr Beattie said.

“As part of this process we established a $900 million fund comprising a government contribution of $300 million from the Queensland Future Growth Fund and $600 million over ten years from the State’s coal industry.

“The fund is devoted to the research and development of clean coal technologies that can make a real difference to the production of greenhouse gas emissions.”

Mr Beattie said the Clean Coal Council will provide oversight for administration of the fund as well as provide advice to both Government and industry on future policy directions.

“Deputy Premier Anna Bligh and myself will be the alternate Chairs of the Council,” Mr Beattie said.

“Other members will include:

• Mr John Pegler, President Queensland Resources Council, Chief Executive of Ensham Resources
• Mr Doug Ritchie, Managing Director of Rio Tinto Coal Australia
