The Honourable Peter Beattie

SMART STATE JOBS FIGURE LEADS THE NATION AGAIN

Queensland’s unemployment rate has eclipsed the national figure for a record 36th consecutive month, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

Mr Beattie said the Smart State was the nation’s jobs generator.

“Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show Queensland’s trend monthly unemployment rate for June reached a record low of 3.4%,” Mr Beattie said.

“By comparison the national figure for the same period was 4.3%

“We have now been below the national figure for three years.

“Trend full-time jobs growth continued to drive overall employment growth in Queensland with 3,700 full-time jobs created in the Smart State in the past month.

“Over the year to June total employment rose by 95,200 persons – more than 35% of all jobs created nationally over the same period.

“These are terrific figures and are another strong endorsement of the work we are doing to grow and diversify our economy.

“Last financial year the average unemployment rate fell to a 33-year-low of 4%.

“As a key indicator of a State’s economic performance it is hard to find better.”

Mr Beattie said unemployment figures had never been this low before.

“These are dreamed-of results and everyone from the State’s employers, employees, big business and small can share in the success,” Mr Beattie said.

“We are the growth State of the nation and jobseekers entering the market now have better prospects of finding a job than previous generations.

“Opportunities are endless and we have an exciting forward program of capital projects that will keep investment and growth strong in the Smart State.”
