FESTIVAL SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON INDEPENDENT FILM

A focus on independent filmmaking will put local filmmakers in the spotlight at this year’s Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF).

Launching the festival today, Arts Minister Rod Welford, said more than 100 films would be screened this year, with the majority from independent filmmakers.

“In this age of big-budget blockbusters, few people understand the importance of independent film,” Mr Welford said.

“It is the heart and soul of the film industry and the training ground for our future stars – both in front of and behind the camera.

“The focus on independent film this year will provide entertaining cinema experiences for audiences as well as a platform for our talented budding filmmakers.”

Mr Welford said BIFF 2007 would open and close with titles by directors renowned for their independent films.

“Fay Grim by Hal Hartley will open the festival on Thursday 2 August, and Michael Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart has been chosen as the closing film for Sunday 12 August,” he said.

“Australian filmmakers will also play a prominent role, with 12 Australian features and more than 20 Australian shorts.”

Mr Welford said he was delighted the Australian Cinematheque, at the Gallery of Modern Art, would be used as a BIFF venue for the first time this year.

“Also, in the spirit of fostering new talent, this year’s BIFF program will include the Warner Roadshow Queensland New Filmmakers Awards, to be announced on 11 August,” he said.

“I am pleased to see the BIFF in the Burbs program is continuing this year, with more than 15 free community screenings across south east Queensland.

“Cine Sparks, the Australian Film Festival for Young People, is also returning this year, giving school groups free access to quality films.”

The BIFF ticketed program runs from 2-12 August. For more information about the festival including the program, screening locations and ticketing, go to www.biff.com.au.
